Residential ’Smoke Alarms’ Not All the Same

September 16, 2014

Make your home safer by understanding the differences and why they matter.

People generally think that "a smoke alarm is a smoke alarm." However, that is not the case, and it is important to be aware of the differences. In reality there are two types of residential alarms for smoke/fire. Ionization smoke alarms are quicker to warn about flaming fires. Photoelectric alarms are quicker to warn about smoldering fires. Because fires can start in a variety of ways and from a variety of materials, it is best to use both types of alarms in the home, as this will increase the likelihood that any type of fire would be detected more quickly. It is also wise to make sure that your alarms are replaced every five years because the ’sensor’ components degrade with age, making the detector unreliable. To learn more, contact Lappen Security.
